THE ITEM
This charming work of handblown, mid-century Czech art glass is by Jan Beranek of Skrdlovice glassworks.

This sculpted piece has the Skrdlovice hallmarks within it's thick-set, elliptical and lobed form. The balanced and mild twist to the form gives this piece it's prismatic qualities, creating beautiful refractions when the dish is in the path of sunlight. The colour palette is predominantly clear with accents of warm pink, yellow and a stroke of sharp cobalt blue.

This piece works well on its own as a standalone piece to appreciate it's refractive abilities but would also be great as a mini planter for succulent fans.

A BIT OF HISTORY

The Skrdlovice glassworks was founded by Emanuel Beranek and his three brothers in 1940 and originally named Beranek glassworks. Emanuel was the glasswork's designer, who would eventually be joined by his two sons Jan and Jindrich in the 1950s.

Other well-known designers who also designed at Skrdlovice include: Maria Stahlikova, Jaroslav Svoboda, Jarmila Svoboda, Pavel Jezek and Frantisek Vizner. Skrdlovice would later be renamed as Beranek after re-privatisation and the company would go on until the factory closed in 2008.
