This piece is simply formed but wonderfully tactile in its glaze.
The base semi-gloss glaze is a warm copper cinnamon brown and is visible at the neck and handle of the vases as well interior of the vases. Overlaid on the base glaze is the rich and sumptuous foam lava glaze in the colours of cappuccino foam. The lava has been applied in layers, giving a strata and dune effect.
This piece makes a superb addition to any lava or drip glaze collection and would suit a room with Vintage, Mid Century or Modernist theme inspired decor.
A BIT OF HISTORY
Scheurich was founded in 1923 and started off selling china, porcelain and glass wholesale. It wasn't until the 1950's that Scheurich started to produce ceramics. In the 1960's the Fat Lava era begins with the thick textured drip glazes and bubbling crater effect glazes giving the fat lava effect. Until the 80's Scheurich was the largest West Germany Ceramic Manufacturer. Scheurich is also known for its sought after large floor vases.
The embossed 5 digits on the bottoms of the vases indicate the shape and size. This piece for example, the digits are: 414-16 the '414' stands for the shape while the '16' indicates that the vase is 16 cm tall. The more recent pottery produced has a three circle marking embossed on the bottoms of the pieces. Scheurich still produces ceramics today.
Excellent, no chips, cracks, scratches or crazing as might be expected for a piece of this age; there are light signs of use on the interior of the vase which are commensurate with the age of the piece - please see photos as part of the condition report.
