THE ITEM
This charming pair of Modernist vases are by Albert Kiessling's (b. 1909 - d. 1964) studio which was based in Langenhessen, East Germany.

The forms of both pieces carry strong, circular Atomic Age design influences, shapes reminiscent of futuristic air traffic control or watchtowers, which are iconic of the era.

The glaze decor is am interspersing blend of semi-matte foam lava in tones of cool Stone beige and Dark Chocolate brown. The overlaying of the foam lava glaze creates a subtle yet tactile texture. Both pieces are finished with a matte interior glaze of the Dark Chocolate brown that is accented with a mild dappling of the beige.

A BIT OF HISTORY
Albert Kiessling (b. 1909 - d. 1964) originally trained as a mechanical engineer before discovering his passion for ceramics. He would eventually master the craft and set up his own studio in 1954 but would sadly pass away 10 years later.

Kiessling became known as a specialist and virtuoso in wax-resist glazes during his career, particularly his 'Snakeskin' glaze which became popular. Works by Kiessling's studio are comparatively rare finds due to the short time his studio was in operation, his rarest works are decorated with a crystalline glaze.

CONDITION
Excellent. No chips, cracks or repairs. Please refer to photos as they form part of the condition report. The base of both vases is inscribed with faint Kiessling's studio stamp of a shield and further marked as 'handgedreht' [Tr. 'hand-turned']
