THE ITEM

This stunning, ethereal and delicate work of handblown, mid-century art glass is Fazzoletto glass.

Fazzoletto translates as 'folded handkerchief' and indeed, the rippling folds of this piece mimics a gathered square of shimmering golden organza fabric. The colours in this piece include that of Natural Amber and Pink Coral within which is embedded gold and silver Aventurine.

The Aventurine effect is like that of overlaid layers of gold leaf gently swirling and separating within the glass. Aventurine within Fazzoletto is an uncommon decor and thus, makes this piece a rarer find.

The piece is finished with a circlet of clear glass at the base, which creates a 'foot' to lightly elevate it from the surface.

CONDITION

Excellent. No chips, cracks or repairs and no signs of use wear, please see photos as part of the condition report. The underside of the base is signed, though it's not been possible discern the signature.

Avventurina (English: Aventurine) is a Murano glass-making technique developed in Murano in the 17th century. It was first mentioned in a document dating from 1614 as "a kind of stone with gilt stars inside" and had already mesmerised people with the unusual and attractive look. The technique owes its name to the discovery happening by chance and thanks to a lucky coincidence when a glass artisan is said to have accidentally dropped some metal shavings into the glass mixture. Italians say it happened "all'avventura", which in Italian means "by chance".
