THE ITEM
This stunning mid-century modernist piece is the creatively collaborative effort of well known mid-mod ceramic designers Gerda Heuckeroth and Heinz Siery. This design was created for popular West German ceramic company Carstens Tonnieshof.

The iconic 'UFO' form of this piece is harmoniously balanced and an excellent canvas for the sumptuous lava glaze. The base glaze is a semi-matte Powdered Azure that has been blended with bands and accents of Charcoal black. Overlaid onto the base is the sumptuously poured fat lava glaze in a palette of matte Sand, Stone, Beige and Charcoal.

This superb piece is adaptable to many decors such as Vintage, Retro, Contemporary or even Industrial themed decor rooms.

A BIT OF HISTORY
The original Carstens factory was founded as early as the 1880s by the Carstens brothers Christian and Ernst but little is known about the company during the early days. However, it is known that Carstens had collapsed during the was and was re-established was Carstens Tonnieshof around 1946 by father and son Ernst and Christian in Fredelsloh. Tonnieshof was the name of the farm where the manufactory was established. Carstens quality and range brought them continued success so that by 1953, they had 400 employees. By the 1970’s they had factories in Austria, Australia and South America. Sadly, due to financial problems, Carstens Tonnieshof closed down completely in 1984.

Trude Carstens was artistic director until her death in 1965. The company was very successful, producing a wide range of shapes and glazes. Their main designers included Trude Carstens, Gerda Heuckeroth, Heinz Siery and Dieter Peter.

Heinz Siery was a well-known designer in the mid-century modern era, creating popular designs for multiple ceramic studios and companies such as the 'Jura', 'Amsterdaam', 'Wien' and 'Lora'. In Carstens, Siery collaborated with Heuckeroth to create many Modernist and geometrically inspired designs.

Gerda Heuckeroth was also one of the few and often named designers during the mid-century period. She created many popular designs for Ruscha, Urania Ceramano and Carstens Tönnieshof, artistically directing Carstens Tonnieshof's high-end Atelier range.
