THE ITEM
The highlight of this vase is not in the simple shape with the mildly exaggerated curve and lightly fluted neck. The star of the show is the hand painted drip glaze decor in a vibrant palette reflecting the vibrant colours used in the Fauvism and Cubism movements of the time period.

The base glaze is white that is overlaid with a vibrant Marigold orange around the interior of the rim and the upper 'neck and shoulders' of the vase. Next is a pale Lemon yellow and Kingfisher blue. The colours have been finely applied, creating an effect resembling the brushing of water over a watercolour pencil drawing.

A BIT OF HISTORY
Empire Ware began life as Empire Works, producing earthenware and porcelain in 1896 in Stoke-on-Trent. The company lasted through the decades reinventing themselves a few times until the works became too difficult to modernise and led to their closure in 1967. In more recent times, the mark 'Empire Ware Made in Portugal' appeared on the market however, pieces from this company are known as a tribute and reproductions of the original company.
