THE ITEM
This excellent work of mid-century Modernist design was by Anton Piesche, which later became part of VEB Lausitzer Keramik during the GDR period.

The simple form of this piece is an excellent canvas for the etched Sgraffito decor and gloss black glaze. Whilst the geometric track Sgraffito decor of this piece is not totally uncommon, the density of there being eight rows of the hand-etched pattern on this particular piece makes it a rarity.

A BIT OF HISTORY
The full history of Piesche & Reif is somewhat unclear, however, it is known that VEB Lausitzer Keramik was formed in 1972 from four independent companies. The location in Kamenz was the company originally founded by Anton Piesche and the location in Bischofswerda was the former branch of Piesche & Reif. The other two locations included Königsbrück, which was added in 1973 and emerged from the company Alfred Dietze and the final location of Pulsnitz was added in 1976 was from the pottery Martin Jürgel.
