This simply formed yet elegant piece is of Mid Century Swedish Modernist design. The design and type of clay used reflects prevalent Swedish Modern design influences and can be found in the works of Ulla Winblad of Alingsas Keramik and Elsi Bourelius of Jie Gantofta produced during the same time period.
True to the roots of Modernist design, the simplicity in the form of this vase speaks to an honest expression of the natural material. The abstract bottle form is evenly balanced and finished with a severe flat rim, giving center stage to the rich, matte textured, dark-chocolate hued earthenware clay and Sgraffito, gloss glazed decor.
The encircling surface decor is a softly geometric and incised Sgraffito pattern which makes the piece subtly tactile and presenting a further display of the clean and sleek delineation of the Modernist influence. The Sgraffito pattern is accentuated with the use of a striking shade of pale Chartreuse-Lime that is overlaid with a clear, high-gloss glaze. The Sgraffito and the high-gloss combination creates standout contrast against the matte Dark Chocolate earthenware.
The combination of multiple Modernist influences in the form, detail, and glaze is seamless and enables this elegantly expressive piece to suit a room with Contemporary, Modernist or even Industrial themed decor.
