THE ITEM

This piece is simply formed but wonderfully tactile in its glaze.

The base glaze is a very deep, glossy black coffee brown and is a silky canvas for the subtle lava glaze. The foam lava glaze is a rich mix of golden and mustard hues interspersed with shades of paprika. Together, the smooth base gloss and the matte foam gloss makes a superbly juxtaposed pairing.

This piece makes an excellent addition to any lava or drip glaze collection and would suit a room with Vintage, Mid Century or Modernist theme inspired decor.

A BIT OF HISTORY

Scheurich was founded in 1923 and started off selling china, porcelain and glass wholesale. It wasn't until the 1950's that Scheurich started to produce ceramics. In the 1960's the Fat Lava era begins with the thick textured drip glazes and bubbling crater effect glazes giving the fat lava effect. Until the 80's Scheurich was the largest West Germany Ceramic Manufacturer. Scheurich is also known for its sought after large floor vases.

The embossed 5 digits on the bottoms of the vases indicate the shape and size. This piece for example, the digits are: 401-20 the '401' represents the form of the piece while the '20' indicates that the vase is 20 cm tall. The more recent pottery produced has a three circle marking embossed on the bottoms of the pieces. Scheurich still produces ceramics today.
