THE ITEM

This work of lasting Art Deco design is Empire Ware that was produced in the 1930s by the English company Empire Porcelain Co.

The simple but elegant form bears the style influences of it's time, with the mildly exaggerated handles and lightly fluted neck reflecting international styles outside of Europe. The hand painted drip glaze decor is of a vibrant palette mirroring vivid colours used in the Fauvism and Cubism art movements popular around that time.

The base glaze is white that is overlaid with a vibrant Marigold orange around the interior of the rim and the upper 'neck and shoulders' of the vase. Next is a pale Lemon yellow and Kingfisher blue. The colours have been finely applied, creating an effect resembling the brushing of water over a watercolour pencil drawing.

A BIT OF HISTORY
Empire Ware began life as Empire Works, producing earthenware and porcelain in 1896 in Stoke-on-Trent. The company lasted through the decades reinventing themselves a few times until the works became too difficult to modernise and led to their closure in 1967. In more recent times, the mark 'Empire Ware Made in Portugal' appeared on the market however, pieces from this company are known as a tribute and reproductions of the original company.
