THE ITEM
This superb work of sculpted art glass is a well-known design, number 8533 by glass artist Pavel Juda of Škrdlovice glassworks.

The biomorphic form is that of an abstract and inverted teardrop shape which is echoed in the smaller hollow at the centre. The piece distinctly avoids harsh angles and lines and instead, opts for soft curves all over. At the core, there is a well of deep amber captured colour that is adorned with rising rings of controlled bubbles.

A BIT OF HISTORY

Škrdlovice / Beránek is one of the 20th century’s greatest but sadly obscured glass companies. For decades, the company was largely hidden from the world and the major contribution it made to 20th Century glass design is only now being uncovered and reappraised by scholars, design historians and collectors.

Founded in 1942, in the midst of the Second World War by the enterprising and talented glass master Emanuel Beránek, their earliest designs were produced using broken waste glass and peat to fire the furnaces. A huge amount of raw talent and sheer determination meant that against all odds, the company survived and flourished under Communist rule in the 1950s and 1960s.

The company would go on to export its vast and diverse range of colourful, biomorphic glass across the world. From the 1950s and into the early 21st Century, nearly every one of Czechoslovakia’s influential glass designers worked at Škrdlovice, including now globally revered names such as František and Vízner.

Many of the company’s other designers also have international reputations today and their work can be found in museums as well as important private and public collections all over the world. The Škrdlovice factory closed in 2008.
