THE ITEM
This magnificent work of Swedish Mid Century, Modernist design is a floor vase with a rare design by Tilgmans Keramik of Gothenburg, Sweden.

The design of this piece is attributed to Marian Zawadzki (b. 1912 - d. 1978) professor, artist and ceramist. Zawadzki's experimentation with the Sgraffito technique and particularly, his exploration into geometric Modernist designs brought great popularity and appreciation to Tilgman's ceramics. His work subsequently became exemplary for the Tilgman's product line.

Zawadzki's use of the Sgraffito technique is absolutely a feature in this piece. True to the roots of Modernist design, the simple form and striking decor of this vase speaks to an honest expression of the natural earthenware. The texture of the earthenware is very tactile, with the non-Sgraffito and non-glazed sections of the body left deliberately coarse and matte glazed.

The matte glazed sections create confident contrast to the gloss glazed Sgraffito sections. The Sgraffito sections the creates the overall stylised 'Angelfish' decor are created from deeply engraved and cut geometric shapes and patterns which are then decorated with bold fusions of high gloss coloured glaze. The piece is finished with an accent of Turquoise-blue/teal gloss glaze on the interior.

CONDITION
Excellent. No crazing, cracks or repairs. Mentioned for completeness: there are minor, negligible chips on the exterior which blend in with the roughly textured decor and are commensurate with the age of the piece. There is also very mild use wear on the interior, which is again, commensurate with the age of the piece. Please refer to photos as part of the condition report. The underside of the base of the vase is stamped with Tilgman's 'Tilgmans Keramik' and 'Made in Sweden' stamp.

A BIT OF HISTORY
Marian Zawadzki (b. 1912 - d. 1978)
Antoni Marian Zawadzki was an associate professor, artist and ceramist, was born in Poland in 1912 who, as a refugee, moved to Gothenburg in Sweden in 1953. In Gothenburg he worked as an artistic director at Tilgmans Keramik. Zawadzki's best known for his richly decorated objects in the Sgraffito technique. His works included lamp bases, vases, bowls, urns and wall plates and he would receive commissions for public, municipal and private buildings.

Tilgmans Keramik (1948 - c. mid-1990s)
Paul Harald 'Harry' Tilgmann, ceramic manufacturer, emigrated from Germany to Sweden around 1948 and founded Tilgmans Keramik in Gothenburg during this time. The pottery initially employed about 16 people. It would be 5 years later until Harry Tilgman would meet Marian Zawadzki and hire him to explore products with the Sgraffito technique. Tilgman's would enjoy success with their Sgraffito decorated products as well as their animal figures and would expand to around 80 employees during the 1960s. Sadly, not much is known beyond this except that the company would be dismissed from the trade register in 2009 as having had no registered business since the 1990s.
