This beautifully hand-painted Swedish mid-century piece is by Margit Lagerqvist of Tilgmans Keramik, Sweden. This hand-thrown piece features a footed base that graduates outwards into the figure-8 shoulder and rim, rippling subtly and organically.
The decor demonstrates the Sgraffito technique and style that became iconically Tilgmans and was developed by their artistic director, Marian Zawadzki. The glaze alternates between gloss and matte and is interspersed with the lines of Sgraffito which highlight details such as individual petals, plant stems and definition of leaves.
This style of décor has come to define the 'look' of Tilgman’s mid-century pieces and appeared soon after Marian started with Tilgman’s in 1953. The piece represents an exceptional and charming example of Swedish mid-century hygge.
CONDITION
Excellent. No cracks or repairs. Mentioned for completeness; there is mild wear on the underside of the base that is commensurate with the age of the piece. Please see photographs as they form part of the condition report. The underside of the vase bears "436, Tilgmans, Made in Sweden' and Lagerqvist's initials crossed-through 'M'.

A BIT OF HISTORY
Tilgmans Keramik (1948 - c. 1975, Tilgmans Ireland - until 1990s)
Paul Harald 'Harry' Tilgmann, ceramic manufacturer, emigrated from Germany to Sweden around 1948 and founded Tilgmans Keramik in Gothenburg during this time. The pottery initially employed about 16 people. It would be 5 years later until Harry Tilgman would meet Marian Zawadzki and hire him to explore products with the Sgraffito technique. Tilgman's would enjoy success with their Sgraffito decorated products as well as their animal figures and would expand to around 80 employees during the 1960s. Sadly, not much is known beyond this except that the company would be dismissed from the trade register in 2009 as having had no registered business since the 1990s.
