THE ITEM
This elegant lava vase of 1960s Modernist design is by West German pottery manufacturer Scheurich.

The base gloss glaze of the exterior is a soft semi-matte grey, this is overlaid all over with tactile freckles of white foam lava glaze. The vase is finished with an interior of warm and sunny yellow gloss glaze. Due to the handpainted nature of applying the glaze, there is a slim band of yellow around the rim.

A BIT OF HISTORY
Scheurich was founded in 1923 and started off selling china, porcelain and glass wholesale. It wasn't until the 1950's that Scheurich started to produce ceramics. In the 1960's the Fat Lava era began, with the thick textured drip glazes and bubbling crater effect glazes giving the famous fat lava effect. Until the 80's Scheurich was the largest West Germany Ceramic Manufacturer. Scheurich is also known for its sought after large floor vases and still produces ceramics today.

The embossed 5 digits on the bottoms of the vases indicate the shape and size. This piece for example, the digits are: 242-22 the '242' stands for the shape while the '22' indicates that the vase is 22 cm tall.

CONDITION
Excellent. No chips, cracks, scratches or crazing as might be expected for a piece of this age. There are mild signs of use on the interior of the vase and some movement marks on the underside of the base - please see photos as part of the condition report. On the base is impressed 'FOREIGN, 242 - 22'. The vase also has the original Scheurich label that was in use c. 1960 - 1962.
