THE ITEM
Presenting an exceptional piece of Art Deco influenced design with traces of the Art Nouveau movement in the fabulous combination of brass and glass.

This lampshade is a rare early 20th century find, whilst it's not uncommon to find an Ezan chandelier or sconces, it's less easy to find a lampshade this size with lamp base. The early opalescent glass is made with a technique which incorporated bone ash into the crafting process, you can tell this because when light strikes the glass, it shows off orange-red hues.

The lampshade's stylised and geometrically arranged icicle are a recognised design signature of the glassworks Ezan decor, they also show off the Art Deco design movement influences, which were at it's height when this was made.
The same design influence is reflected in the brass lamp base as are traces of Art Nouveau; the stylised petals crown the top of the base as are stylised leaves and flower buds adorning the rest of the base.

The Art Deco movement was a combination of Modernist styles, fine craftsmanship, rich materials and a breakaway from the previous Art Nouveau design period of detailed ornamentation and heavier materials. During its heyday, the movement represented luxury, glamour and exuberance. This lamp is a beautiful piece of history, epitomising its design roots and would suit a room with Modernist, Contemporary or Vintage inspired decor.

A BIT OF HISTORY
Unfortunately, very little is known about the Ezan glassworks or 'Maison Ezan', other than the site of the factory was based in Ezanville, France where the Ezan glass was produced. Ezan's best known works are in the opalescent stylised icicles, which were hugely popular in the 1930s.

CONDITION
Lampshade: excellent, there is light wear which is commensurate with the age of the piece. There is one tiny fleabite on the inside of the rim - see the last photo of this listing just to get an idea of how tiny this chip is, I've mentioned it for the sake of completeness.
Lamp base has a charming aged patina and a small lift to one edge, again commensurable with age - please do see photos as part of condition report.
The lamp is fully functioning, please note that the plug extension is European.
