THE ITEM
This exceptional and exquisitely intricate work of mid century Venetian art glass has been crafted using the Zanfirico technique.

Zanfirico is a Murano glass technique that involves the stretching and twisting of glass canes to create beautiful spiral and lattice patterns.

This particular piece bears the colour palette characteristic to that of the Venini glassworks. The candy pink, blue, mint and yellow ribbons are twisted with copper avventurine and placed in an alternating pattern in between the finer, net-like white glass. The glass is finished with a ring of clear and avventurine glass, providing elevation for the piece.

CONDITION

Excellent. No chips or cracks, there is mild and unobvious use wear that is commensurable with the age of the piece.

A BIT OF HISTORY
Venini

Venini glassworks was founded in 1921 by Paolo Venini, Giacomo Cappellin, and Andrea Rioda. In 1924, the glassworks was named as Vetri Soffiati Muranesi Venini Cappellin & C and the painter Vittorio Zecchin also became artistic director.

Cappellin left in 1925 to create his own company, and Venini formed a new company with Napoleone Martinuzzi called Vetri Soffiati Muranesi Venini & C, Martinuzzi was artistic director until his departure in 1932. Carlo Scarpa would join in 1932, and picked up the reins as artistic director in 1933. Other designers who have been part of Venini's history include Tobia Scarpa, Fulvio Bianconi and Riccardo Licata.

Zanfirico

The name Zanfirico derives from the surname of a 19th century Italian art dealer, Antonio Sanquirico, however the Zanfirico technique has been used as far back as the 16th century, when it was originally known as 'Filigrana a Retortoli'.
