THE ITEM
Presenting a work of Danish Mid Century design. The glaze is every bit as beautiful as can be seen in the photos, the deeper brown glaze is a finely mottled blend of black coffee, chocolate, mocha, and nutmeg.

The contrasting coffee foam beige is mottled with flecks of cinnamon and turmeric.

Together, the effect gives this piece of stoneware the ability to compliment a room with Modernist, Minimalist or Contemporary inspired decor.

A BIT OF HISTORY
Jens Michael Andersen (1859-1931) founded Michael Andersen & Sons in 1890 out of an existing pottery that had been founded in 1771in the town of Rønne on the island of Bornholm. The company's reputation is speaks of their production as typically of excellent quality both in terms of manufacture and design. The company is still producing today, having been taken over by the artist Solveig Ussing in 1993. Before buying it, Ussing had worked for the company since she was 14 years old!

On the base of ceramics by Michael Andersen, the iconic coat of arms of the three fishes, taken from Rønne's coat of arms was introduced in 1931, and is usually seen together with the model number. The pieces also have continuous numbers, so the lower the number the older model.

Marianne Starck (1938-2007), was educated at the School of Fine Arts in Hamburg and joined the company as Art Director in 1955. Remaining there until 1993, she is perhaps best known for the black and white stylised designs as well as her work with the Persia glaze, created by the founder's son.

CONDITION

Excellent, only wear are faint marks on base which are commensurate with age - no scratches, cracks or chips. Base bears Marianne Starck's inscribed 'MS' initials and company coat of arm's logo as well as the model number 6195. There is also a impressed glaze 'B', which is likely the decorator who applied the glaze.
