This elegantly glamourous work of Art Deco design is by the British Pottery Crown Devon. Like much of Art Deco design, there is a focus on shape and absence of superfluity, however, the form of this piece also carries strong echoes of the Art Deco Odeon style. Art Deco Odeon style references the revolution in British style brought about by the c.260 Odeon cinemas that sprung up across the UK from the late 1920s. Over 13 years, Oscar Deutsch created a circuit of cinemas where the buildings celebrated Art Deco Modernism with sweeping, simple yet strongly defined lines.
The elegant form is an excellent canvas for the matt-satin glaze décor. The colour palette of the glaze is a rich base of Cream that is smoothly blended into a Powdered Verdigris green and overlaid with dapples of Pale Lemon yellow and Pale Periwinkle blue.
CONDITION Excellent. There are no chips or repairs. There are movement marks on the underside of the base, ruffling to the glaze along the edge of the base and general crazing all over that are commensurate with the age of the piece. A BIT OF HISTORY Crown Devon Fieldings (1870 - 1982) The pottery was founded in 1870 by Simon Fieldings in Stoke on Trent but it would be 10 years later before they began to produce Majolica style pottery that was popular during the 1880s. Their product range began to expand in the 1890s, working with British United Clock company and they would continue to expand their product range as popularity flourished after successful world trade fairs in the 1900s. They sustained their success for over a century before sadly closing in 1982 at the time of the recession.

This striking work of mid-century Modern design is by Roger Capron (b.1922 - d.2006) for his ceramic studio factory in Vallauris, France. Alongside names such as Picasso, Robert Picault and Jean Derval, Capron was a key contributing figure in the renaissance of ceramics in Vallauris.
The bold use of the hand-painted, strong Charcoal black lines to separate and organically shape the high-colour, gloss-glazed sections is characteristic of Capron's design style. The setting of the colour palette against the backdrop of the luxuriantly sumptuous, silky matt-white base glaze is yet another Capron design trait that is applied to the rounded square bottle form. The vivid colour palette for this particular piece consists of Charcoal black, Goldenrod Yellow, Navy Ink blue and Persimmon orange which is a beautiful juxtaposition to the otherwise simple form.
This piece is both subtle and distinct at the same time, with a timelessness to its design that is suitable for standalone display or functionally as a simple Ikebana vase.
CONDITION Very Good. There is mild surface wear to the glaze and movement marks on the underside of the base that is commensurable with age. Mentioned for completeness: There is one chip present on the underside of the base that measures c. 1cm x 0.4cm that does not detract from display. A BIT OF HISTORY Roger Capron (b. 1922 - d. 2006) Capron was born in Vincennes, France in 1922 and became a student at the School of Applied Arts (École des Arts Appliqués à l'Industrie) in Paris at the age of 16, and by 1945, a professor at the same school. In 1946 and at the age of 24, Capron moved to Vallauris, setting up the 'l`Atelier Callis' workshop in collaboration with Robert Picault and Jean Derval. By 1952, he was ready to establish his own ceramic studio factory in Vallauris and within 5 years he'd developed a significant international reputation.
Capron work was known for its Modernistic emblematic forms with characteristics of his work represented in stylized branches, characters, geometrical suns that would functional works of art that made typically made a colourful and creative statement in the spaces they were displayed.
The studio factory sadly closed in 1982 due to the economic crisis but did not prevent the founding of Atelier Capron in 1983. In his lifetime, Capron won numerous design awards, enshrining him as a key contributing figure in ceramic design before his death in 2006.

This sculptural work brings with it a seamless blending of Atomic era and Modernist design and is by British Pottery Beswick, a firmly celebrated name in British ceramics design. The sleek form is reminiscent of the Chemosphere house that was so iconic to Space Age Atomic design.

Following James Beswick's death in 1921, his grandson John took over and continued to expand the business. In 1934, introduced a new range of jugs, bowls and vases decorated with new matte glazes. Responding to the Modernist design influence of the time, many of these highly distinctive shapes were designed by Mr Symcox. These works were often decorated in 'satin-matte' glazes using soft pastel colours running into each other or arranged in striking modern geometric blocks and lines. Beswick would go on to become known for their ceramic animal figures before being taken over by Royal Doulton in 1969 and finally closing in the early 2000s.

This striking work of Swedish mid-century Modernist design by Marian Zawadzki (b. 1912 - d. 1978) who was a professor and later, artist and ceramist for Tilgmans Keramik of Gothenburg, Sweden. Zawadzki's experimentation of the Sgraffito technique brought great popularity and appreciation for Tilgman's ceramics and his work became exemplary for Tilgmans. Zawadzki's stylised use of the Sgraffito technique is absolutely a feature in this piece and is rare as it bears the artist's personal monogram and dating on the body of the vase.
True to the roots of Modernist design, the simple form and boldly geometric décor of this vase speaks to an honest expression of the natural earthenware. The texture of the earthenware is very tactile, with sections left deliberately coarse and unglazed. The unglazed sections create confident contrast against the individually glazed sections of boldly geometric, Sgraffito décor.
The vase is finished with an interior of gloss glaze that is coloured in a Spearmint green towards the neck and a softer cream towards the base.
CONDITION Superb. No cracks or repairs. There are minor, negligible chips on the exterior which are commensurate with the age of the piece and mild use wear on the interior. Please refer to photos as they form part of the condition report. The underside of the base of the vase is stamped with 'Tilgmans Keramik' and 'Made in Sweden' stamp and model number '606'. The body of the vase is inscribed with Zawadzki's 'M' logo and dated with '1966'.

A BIT OF HISTORY Marian Zawadzki (b. 1912 - d. 1978) Antoni Marian Zawadzki (sometimes known as 'Zawadski' or 'Zawadsky') was an associate professor, artist and ceramist, was born in Poland in 1912 who, as a refugee, moved to Gothenburg in Sweden in 1953. In Gothenburg he worked as an artistic director at Tilgmans Keramik. Zawadzki's best known for his richly decorated objects in the Sgraffito technique.
His works included lamp bases, vases, bowls, urns and wall plates and he would receive commissions for public, municipal and private buildings. Zawadzki would leave Tilgman's Ceramics in 1970, moving to Vallda outside Kungsbacka where he opened his own workshop, Vallda Keramik. The production in his own workshop is very similar to his work at Tilgmans.

This elegantly stylised work of Art Deco design is by the English pottery Shorter and Son (est. c. 1900 - c. 1964). The sculpted and abstract jardiniere form firmly displays architectural influences of Art Deco geometricism and echoes from the Art Nouveau period. The overall shape is that of a tiered and asymmetrically rounded-rectangle that is an excellent canvas for the tactile décor.
The décor is a touch-inviting pattern of stylised geometric accents; from the rounded angular borders trimming the tiers to the scalloped borders and flower-like segments. Further elevating this piece is the sumptuous glaze that is a blended dappling of Powdered Peach, Mint green, and Pale Indigo blue tones. The visual appeal of this piece is timeless in style but yet also very much a piece of Art Deco history.
CONDITION Very Good. No chips, cracks, or repairs. The most notable wear is a glaze-flaw, where the glaze was applied unevenly and subsequently created a wear. A BIT OF HISTORY Before the 1920s, Shorter and Son (c. 1900 - 1964) produced Edwardian Majolica ware, creating a broad range of domestic and ornamental ware such as jardinieres, umbrella holders, bowls and vases. From the 1920s onward, their range only broadened however, they would adapt their designs to the burgeoning influences of the period. The design of their tableware and accessories, for example, reflected the Art Deco influences of the greats such as Clarice Cliff and Mabel Leigh designed for Shorter and Son from 1933 to 1935.
Sadly, in the early 1960s, the company faced the death of director Arthur Colley Shorter as well as the loss of a factory in Copeland Street to a road development scheme. Finally, there were significant expenses to convert to smokeless firing to conform with the Clean Air Act. These factors resulted in a decision to accept an offer from S. Fielding & Co. Ltd the owners of Crown Devon around 1964.

This stylised work of British art pottery piece is of English late-Art Deco design from the 1930s and is by the pottery Empire Ware.
Beautifully sculptural and seemingly simple, this piece is a manifestation of the significant technique needed to result in its evenly hand-formed body. The Art Deco accents appear most prominently in the softly geometric, diamond form. The hand-painted, silky, semi-matte glaze décor on the interior is a beautifully dappled blending of Iced/Powdered Turquoise that graduates into the Iced Peach Tea tones. The exterior décor is a reflection of the interior with the same tones.
This piece has a gracefully elegant presence, an embodiment of English Art Deco design from c. 85 years ago. The combination of its form, colour palette and condition makes it a particularly rare find.

A BIT OF HISTORY Empire Ware began life as Empire Works, producing earthenware and porcelain in 1896 in Stoke-on-Trent. The company lasted through the decades reinventing themselves a few times until the works became too difficult to modernise and led to their closure in 1967. In more recent times, the mark 'Empire Ware Made in Portugal' appeared on the market however, pieces from this company are known as a tribute and reproductions of the original company.
This touch-inviting work of art pottery is by the famous English ceramic artist and Art Director of Newport Pottery, Clarice Cliff (b. 1899 - d.1972). This particular piece comes from the Raffia Indiana series by Cliff in 1936(-37) with the form and hand painted décor being inspired by Native American basketware.
The exquisitely tactile design came during a time when taste was towards heavily modelled ware. Cliff reflected this preference into the intricately ribbed ridges on the 8 concentric bands and the carefully painted décor of this dish. This design also came during the time of Cliff's successful breakthrough into international fame, where she received unprecedented publicity and when the phrase 'career woman' did not exist.
This refined piece is an excellent representation of Cliff's innate ability to bring forth and elevate the unique qualities in something that is otherwise seemingly simple. Stylistically timeless, the combination of the design with the colour palette and its condition makes it a particularly rare find.
CONDITION Excellent. There are no chips or repairs, or crazing. There is insignificant and ageing to the glaze that is commensurate with the age of the piece. The underside of the dish is stamped with Cliff's 'Clarice Cliff, NEWPORT POTTERY, ENGLAND' and further stamped with 'REGISTRATION APPLIED FOR' that was in use between 1928-36 as Cliff had to register her designs to deter copies.

A BIT OF HISTORY Clarice Cliff (1899 - 1972) Born in the city of Stoke on Trent that was made famous by its pottery in 1899, Cliff was working in one of the many factories by the time she was 13 and by the late 1920s she was designing the colourful pottery that would blossom her career. Her striking signature characteristics appeared in her use of colour, pattern and form design. Innovative and talented, she would go on to become Art Director for Newport Pottery in 1930.
Cliff became successful and internationally famous on an unprecedented level for a woman ceramic artist despite being known for being shy. Her colourful life and unmistakable skills in design are still being celebrated in modern day.

These elegant works of Art Deco design are by the British Pottery Crown Devon. The carved pitcher jug is Crown Devon's 'London' jug form with the '371' Caisson form vase. Both works are in a matching 'Polished Orange Jasper' glaze and are highly tactile; particularly the London jug with its most standout feature of the vase body swelling around the carved lines, making each section exquisitely touch inviting. The Caisson vase bears subtle geometric and mirroring Art Deco accents of raised stripes and handles.
The semi-matte Polished Orange Jasper silk glaze décor is a blending of Pale Peach dappled with Cinnamon and Espresso Coffee brown. The sumptuous glaze creates the effect of Polished Orange Jasper chalcedony gems. Both pieces are stylistically timeless and the combination of the designs, colour palette as well as the excellent condition makes them a rare find.

The geometric Bauhaus influence is very evident in the evenly-arched, stylised architectural form and further accentuated through subtle plays of cross-hatching within the glaze décor. The sumptuous hand-painted glaze is a base of Vanilla cream that is overlaid with a palette of orange shades, including Apricot, Marmalade, Amber, and Ochre, and further elevated through deeper Coffee brown tones.
Whether on display or used around the home, this work is timelessly stylish in design yet also an excellent representation of the Bauhaus Art Deco movement.
CONDITION Excellent. No chips or repairs. There is a single hairline stress crazing that is very faintly visible to the naked eye but commensurable with the age of the piece, please refer to photos as they form part of the condition report. A BIT OF HISTORY Carstens Uffrecht that was founded in 1845 by Jacob Uffrecht. After the Second World War, the Carstens family lost their ceramics and porcelain factories in East German territory. In 1945, Carstens Uffrecht became the East German vases maker VEB Haldensleben. VEB stands for the German “Volkseigener Betrieb”, meaning a people-owned enterprise and related to state-owned workplaces in the GDR.
Hildegard Delius (1896-1955) and her husband Klaus Delius were the known designers from the mid-1920s to mid-1930s at Carstens Uffrecht, echoing the architectural vision of Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius.
VEB Haldensleben mainly concentrated on making vases of high quality. Like the vases of Strehla, the colours are more subdued than the vases from West Germany. This work of beautifully understated elegance is of Scandinavian mid-century design and by Upsala Ekeby's renowned artistic director, Arthur Percy (b.1886 - d. 1976). In this piece, Percy combines the gentle curves of the classic bottle flask form with a touch-inviting décor. The décor is built on a base of semi-matte clear glaze that highlights the natural Pale Buttermilk cream clay, this is then overlaid with a tessellation of tactile smooth and glossy Daisy white dots of glaze. The piece is finished with a striking contrast of semi-matte Natural Indigo blue on the interior of the vase.
The overall design is a seamless blend of simple sophistication, elevated elegance and Swedish mid century Modernist design.
CONDITION Excellent. No chips, cracks or repairs. There are negligible movement marks to the underside of the base that is commensurate with the age of the piece as well as trivial flaws from the production process (e.g. a small number of white dots have picked up spots of the indigo pigment). The underside also Upsala-Ekeby stamp with the numbers '5062' and 'PERCY' as well as the inscribed initials of 'YW'.

A BIT OF HISTORY Carl Arthur Carlsson-Percy (b.1886 - d. 1976), a leading Swedish ceramist, artist and artistic director, born in Vickleby in 1886. During his early career, Percy travelled to Stockholm and Paris to develop his skills and techniques as a decorative painter, attending schools such as the Académie Collarossi and Matisse Painting School.
He would go on to become artistic director in 1923 at Gefle Porslinsfabrik (which became part of Upsala Ekeby in 1936) and in 1942 he became artistic director at Karlskrona Porslinsfabrik. His early work is characterised by items with soft decorations of flowers and birds and Italian 14th and 16th century inspiration.
During the 1920s, his renowned work includes the series "Gefle", "Vinranka", "Floating Blue", "Iris", "Three Flowers", "Silversties" and "Christina". During the 1930's and 40's came "Suecia", "Exotica" and his perhaps most famous décor "Rubin".
Percys art is represented in a large number of Swedish and foreign museums, including National Museum and Modern Museum, Prince Eugens Waldemarsudde, Art Museum in Gothenburg, and museums in Malmö, Norrköping, Lindköping, Västerås, Borås, Jönköping, Kalmar, Karlstad, Gävle and Östersund, etc. Abroad, one can find his art at the Sévres Museum in Paris, the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Pau, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Metropolian Museum in New York and the Lubeck Museum in Germany and others.

This elegant work of Art Deco design is by the British Pottery Crown Devon. The pitcher jug form is seemingly simple but there are actually a number of subtle Art Deco design nuances incorporated into the design. The body is accentuated by the gently exaggerated curves at the belly and handle, with a finishing accent of a lightly fluted rim and spout. The most standout feature is obviously the carved detail and the way the body of the vase swells around the carved lines, making each section exquisitely tactile.
The semi-matte silk glaze décor is a blending of Sandstone beige, dappled with dashes of pale Golden Sand, this graduates into a wash of Marigold amber. This refined piece is stylistically timeless and the combination of the design, colour palette, size as well as excellent condition makes it a particularly rare find.
CONDITION Excellent. There are no chips or repairs. There is mild and negligible crazing all over that is commensurate with the age of the piece. A BIT OF HISTORY Crown Devon Fieldings (1870 - 1982) The pottery was founded in 1870 by Simon Fieldings in Stoke on Trent but it would be 10 years later before they began to produce Majolica style pottery that was popular during the 1880s. Their product range began to expand in the 1890s, working with British United Clock company and they would continue to expand their product range as popularity flourished after successful world trade fairs in the 1900s. They sustained their success for over a century before sadly closing in 1982 at the time of the recession.

This elegantly whimsical duo of hand-painted and sculpted ceramic art is by celebrated Danish illustrator and glass, silver, ceramics designer Bjorn Wiinblad (b. 1918 - d. 2006). Wiinblad often designed for a number of big names as well as the pottery studios he owned, such as Vaerksted, Nymolle, and Det Blaa Hus. These studio works were crafted at his own Vaerksted [Workshop] studio, which Wiinblad established in 1952 in Copenhagen. Vaerksted pieces by Wiinblad show his painting skills at their best – conveying an emotion or feeling with just a few brushstrokes or marks.
Those familiar with Wiinblads illustrative work will be familiar with the exquisite level of detail his imagination goes to. This richness of detail is brought to life across many elements of this sculpture; such as the individually shaped, stylised decor resting in the figure's hat and the careful attention in the intricate hand-painted patterns decorating the piece and attention given even when illustrating eyelashes.

A BIT OF HISTORY Born in 1918 in Copenhagen, Bjorn Wiinblad began his training and path to success in 1935. Wiinblad sought the path to his first passion of art and enrolled in graphic school at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, debuting in 1945 with an extensive exhibition in Palægade, Copenhagen. He met and became firm friends Jacob E. Bang around this time, who engaged him to work for Nymølle Pottery.
From the beginnings at Nymolle, Wiinblad received multiple commissions, from designing textile and embroidery patterns to drawing posters, book and magazine illustrations. Wiinblad drew for the United Nations in Paris and designed costumes and stages for several theatrical performances. His fame grew in Denmark but soon would extend to Norway and Sweden and in 1950 his ceramics were exhibited at Bonnier's in New York, which specialised in Scandinavian design.
Wiinblad's recognition and acclaim would continue to grow, bringing him a silver medal at the first international ceramics festival in 1955 in Cannes, France and appointment as artistic director for Rosenthal in 1960. During the 1960s, Wiinblad would become owner to a number of ceramic studios including Vaerksted, Nymolle and Det Blaa Hus. He would make Det Blaa Hus his workshop and home until his death in 2006.

This hand-thrown and hand-glazed work comes from Oldfors popular Kokos series, for which there are ten works of earthenware dishes, bowls and vases designed in 1954 and in production until 1958. The series is characterised by the clean-lined, swelling forms and the deliciously tactile decor. The decor is an arrangement of sgraffito bands of glossy Dandelion yellow glaze alternating with the unglazed Dark Chocolate earthenware. The combination of the silky smooth glaze bands and the unglazed elements present a striking and tactile contrast.

Though Oldfors was a late arrival to her ceramics career, beginning her studies in 1947 in Gothenburg, she became incredibly successful. Her career at Upsala Ekeby began in 1950 when she was 30 and she would go on to set up her own studio 'Bränd Form' with a number of exhibitions representing Upsala Ekeby and her own studio. The curators of the day are notably known to have said "She has an astonishing certainty in the abstract decor and its adaptation to the form. In this area, she does not have many competitors in our ceramics."

A BIT OF HISTORY Charlotte Rhead (b. 1885 - d. 1947) was an English ceramics designer active in the 1920s and the 1930s in the Potteries area of Staffordshire. Rhead came from an artistic family and from the beginning of the 20th century, Charlotte began working for Wardle & Co. a pottery in the nearby town of Hanley. Though she did not stay long, it gave her the opportunity to learn the skill of tube-lining, which became a technique that would become characteristic to her career as a designer.
She secured her first engagement as a designer in the early 1900s at T&R Boote before joining her father at Wood & Sons. Rhead is well known for her association with Burgess & Leigh, where she was a designer from 1926 to 1931 and also her work at Crown Ducal from 1931 onwards.

The series is characterised by the delightfully simple form, like that of an abstract 60s pinafore dress, the glossy glaze is a palette of Chocolate brown, with 'dot' discs of Pineapple yellow on Milk white. The form of this piece and palette is undeniably exuberant, striking and vivacious, combined with the size - makes this a particularly rare find.

A BIT OF HISTORY Mari Peterson Särgava, ceramicist and textile artist (b. 1911- d. 2000) began her career with an internship with Arabia in Finland and it was during this time she married Gustaf Simmulson.
Simmulson moved to Sweden in 1944 and began working with Wilhelm Kåge at Gustavsbergs, staying until 1949. Her career took her to Uppsala Ekeby in 1949, where she designed vases, figures, reliefs and wall paintings, many of them noted as unique pieces. She became a leading designer at Uppsala Ekeby where she remained until the early 1970s. Simmulson also received commissions for public pieces including at Luleå Kol, Upplandsbanken and Pharmacia.

This exquisitely intricate Totai Shippo piece is dated to c.1880 from the Japanese Meiji era (1868-1912 ).
Totai Shippo is the technique of applying Cloisonné enamel to ceramic believed to have been discovered by Sukamoto Kaisuke (b.1828 - d.1887) some time around 1868. Traditional Cloisonné of using thin wire or metal to contain different coloured enamels applied to a metal vessel itself is already a revered technique. Totai Shippo elevates the technique to another level when you consider the detailed wired sections of this piece is as small as 1-2mm in width.
This particular piece bears two 'faces', a panel on each side that displays the detailed design of butterflies, Chrysanthemums and Anemones in tones of Dusted Powder and Cobalt Blue, Oxblood Red and Apple Green. Encircling the panels are features of Sakura buds and blossom interwoven with the Teal patterned background.
This excellent work of art makes for a superbly decorative and highly collectable art feature.

A BIT OF HISTORY Japanese Cloisonne enamelware is a technique introduced to Japan around the Tokugawa period during the 16th century.
Cloisonne or 'Cloisonné' are metalwork objects with decoration that is applied by creating separating sections using wire or thin metal. The sections are filled with different coloured enamels to create a visual image or pattern and the whole piece be fired multiple times to realise the colours.

Beautifully sculptural and seemingly simple, this piece is a manifestation of the significant technique needed to result in its evenly hand-formed body. Wadeheath Ceramics 1867 - present Wadeheath Ceramics was originally founded in 1867, in Burslem, England, a collective of different pottery companies that specialised in earthenware and porcelain.

Reflecting the Modernist design influences of its time, these pieces are a simple celebration of organic form and function with light-giving paler colours.

The underside of the base is stamped with Sylvac's mark in use around the 1950s of 'SYLVAC, MADE IN ENGLAND', and the model number '2446' and 'B'.

A BIT OF HISTORY SylvaC (with a deliberate capital C at the end) was founded in 1894 by William Copestake and William Shaw, originally named Shaw & Copestake. It would be 1937 till a merging of companies formed under the name of Sylvac. Central to its history were figurines of animals, and rabbits in particular, and the company was known for its relatively inexpensive and widely available tableware and decorative works. SylvaC continued its production until the early 1980s.

THE ITEM This richly detailed yet simply silhouetted studio ceramic sculpture is a work of contemporary French design.
Featured is a strong composition and fusion of techniques upon the clay as well as within the glaze. From the Sgrafitto-like etched accents, print impression to the clay to the layers of glaze which have been brush-painted and dripped. The colour palette is a harmonious blend of earth tones. The colours range across a spectrum of browns with some emphasised in a metallic tint and extends into the glossy Red Earth hues.
The sculpture features a combination of design influences from the Modernist celebration of functional form to the Brutalist ' celebration of raw materials. Crafted with a centralised reservoir, this piece is well suited to function as an Ikebana and indeed, both the form and colours hint at Japanese Raku pottery.
CONDITION Excellent. There is mild use wear in the form of movement marks on the underside of the base that is commensurate with the age of the piece. Mentioned for completeness: There is a hairline fracture on the underside of the base, however, this is from the crafting process and not damage or defect, it is also not visible when the piece is upright and on display. This chicly fun, Modernist Op Art work that is brimming with Summery vibes is of mid-century German design.
Crafted from white clay, the form of this piece is that of a stylised Moon Flask. The two 'faces' of the vase bears a finishing of lightly ingrained concentric circles, which give a tactile, rippling effect. The subtle but elegant form makes this an excellent piece for the art of Ikebana [tr. 'making flowers alive'.] and a superb canvas for the beautiful glaze. The base gloss glaze is a cool Sky blue that has been overlaid with a free-flowing Daisy white upon which is an infusion of coloured sprinklings in tones Blueberry, Strawberry, Lemon and Lime.

THE ITEM This elegant pair of hand-illustrated and painted works are from Amsterdam by Dutch artist T Wagner.
Crafted from red clay, the shape of these plates are smoothly spun and very mildly concave. Both dishes are overlaid with a thickly applied, smooth Stone hued glaze which operates as a canvas. Delicately illustrated on one plate with a deep navy-black is a spirited, galloping horse which has been painted in a palette of Turquoise teal and Lemon Sherbet yellow. Illustrated on the other plate in a similarly delicate manner with a deep Sepia, is the horse and carriage scene which has been painted in a matching colour palette of deep navy-black, Turquoise teal and Lemon Sherbet yellow. Both plates are finished with a clear, gloss glaze.
These finely composed pieces resemble watercolour paintings, works of art captured in ceramic and bring with them charming, idyllic vibes.
CONDITION Excellent. No chips, damage or repairs. There is mild age wear that is most evident in the mild crazing all over, please refer to photos as they form part of the condition report. The reverse side of both plates is signed with the initials of 'TW' and have the necessary notches for threading hanging cords.

THE ITEM This bold and eyecatching piece of 1960s Pop Art ceramic is attributed to being of Belgian design.
The Paisley form is stylised and chic and an excellent canvas for the highly decorative glaze. The colourful gloss glaze is composed of shades of Caramel brown, Golden brown, Raspberry red, Pumpkin orange and Cerulean blue that is typical of the time. The exterior is glazed with an enamelled silver black which has been traced along the rim and allowed to run down the edge.
This striking piece makes a superb accent piece for a console or coffee table and would suit a Retro, Pop Art or Contemporary decor themed room.
CONDITION Very Good. There is gentle crazing to the glaze all over the dish and mild wear that is predominantly on the underside of the dish, both of which is commensurable with the age of the piece. Please refer to the photos as they form part of the condition report.

'Owl Vase' by Reflex Craft Cooperative 'Spoldzielnia Rzemieslnicza' in Cherry Chocolate, 1970s

This charming bohemian work of mid-century design, produced around the 1970s is by the Polish Reflex Craft Cooperative, 'Spółdzielnia Rzemieślnicza Reflex', based in Warsaw.
The design was named the 'Wazon Sowa', which translates as the 'Owl Vase' although the sweeping twist on both sides suggests a stylised fox peering out from behind its upswept tail.
The glossy glaze carries rich tones of chocolate brown and a warm, deep red - hence the reference to 'Cherry Chocolate - as well as accents of Cream and Caramel.
CONDITION Excellent. No chips, cracks or repairs. There is mild crazing all over and negligible use wear on the interior and the exterior that is commensurate with the age of the piece. Please refer to photos as they form part of the condition report. The underside of the vase base bears the Reflex Craft Cooperative's original paper label.

THE ITEM This stunning work of mid-century design is by Czech pottery Ditmar Urbach. The elegant tower form is softly geometric from its square base and is an excellent canvas for the poured, running glaze decor. The base glossy glaze is a semi-matte silken Black glaze, over which is poured and blended the layers of translucent as well as opaque teal, green, blue and grey gloss glaze. The curves of the vase helps to create the beautiful flowing trails.

A BIT OF HISTORY Ditmar-Urbach AG Porcelain Factories operated under various names in Turn-Teplitz, Bohemia (later Trnovany, Czechoslovakia), from 1882 to 1938. The pottery began as Brothers Urbach. It merged with a factory owned by Rudolf Ditmar's heirs in 1919 and became Ditmar-Urbach.
The Nazis took over the factory from the Jewish owners in 1938 and it became part of Ostmark-Ceramic. It was nationalized after the end of the war in 1945. In 1947 Kurt Lichtenstern - heir to Ditmar Urbach's previous owner Richard Lichtenstern - who had emigrated to the U.S. and changed his name to Conrad H. Lester, took back the company. The final change was when the company was eventually taken over in 1967 by the Keramik Holding Laufen, which is now part of the ROCA group.
Ditmar Urbach produced in a broad range of styles for their decor and are well known for their handpainted Art Deco animal-themed kitchenalia and 'Alienware' series, named by collectors for their unusual combination of shapes, colours and glazes.
