THE ITEM

This beautiful work of 1950s British mid-century design is by Poole Pottery. The conch shell form is from the popular Twintone glaze series, in the Peach Bloom and Gull colourway.

This particular twin-tone colourway was introduced in 1953 and went on to become very popular. The glaze carries a soft sheen with the Peach shade a warm, peach-pink and the Gull shade a subtle mottled grey. The gull shade is mentioned in the Poole Twintone book as being like a British sky on a windy day.

A BIT OF HISTORY

Poole Pottery is a pottery based in Stoke on Trent, England, founded in 1873. The pottery produced pottery by hand until it moved its factory operations away in 1999. Production continued at a new site in Sopers Lane until its closure in 2006. Historical products from Poole Pottery are displayed in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
