Art Nouveau

Art Nouveau is an international style of art, architecture and applied art, especially the decorative arts, that was most popular between 1890 and 1910. Art Nouveau appeared in a wide variety of strands and, consequently is known by various names, such as the Glasgow Style, or Jugendstil in the German-speaking world. Art Nouveau was aimed at modernizing design, seeking to escape the eclectic historical styles that had previously been popular.

Artists drew inspiration from both organic and geometric forms, evolving elegant designs that united flowing, natural forms resembling the stems and blossoms of plants. The emphasis on linear contours took precedence over colour, which was usually represented with hues such as muted greens, browns, yellows, and blues.

Art Nouveau is a 'total art style', it embraces a wide range of fine and decorative arts, including architecture, painting, graphic art, interior design, jewellery, furniture, textiles, ceramics, glass art, and metal work.
