THE ITEM

This hypnotic handmade work of Modernist design is the beautiful craftsmanship of Villeroy and Boch.

The Op Art decor of the white, black, blue and turquoise swirling opens at the center of the bowl, with the wave of the swirl organically broadening as it reaches the rim. The effect is how you might imagine it to be if you were to take the swirl inside a giant glass marble and reshaped it into a vortex.

Made of Lead crystal, this piece has a much higher index of refraction than normal glass, and consequently a much greater "sparkle".

 A BIT OF HISTORY

The company began in the tiny Lorraine village of Audun le Tiche, where the iron master François Boch set up a pottery company with his three sons in 1748. Some 27 years later, in 1785 Nicolas Villeroy became sole owner of the faience manufactory at Wallerfangen and it would be a further 51 years until the two companies would merge to become Villeroy & Boch, (V&B, also known simply as 'VB').

Although VB's roots began in ceramics, the company would go on to become a lifestyle company producing a wide range of wares for the home. Their renowned Mettlach tiles have gone on to decorate a number of historic landmarks, from Germany’s Cologne Cathedral to the Holland Tunnel in New York City. With it's elevated reputation, VB's tiles were included in the interior decor of the RMS Titanic.
