THE ITEM

Presenting a charming hand painted work from the Biedermeier era, the decor of this piece is a snapshot of artistic style influences during this period of history.

Biedermeier themes reinforced feelings of security, 'Gemütlichkeit' (the idea of a state or feeling of warmth, friendliness, good cheer, peace of mind and a sense of belonging) simplicity and avoidance of political and social commentary.

The stylised depiction of the horse, rifle and female figure deep turquoise and white is accompanied by the text of 'A Roß, a Weib und a Gewehr leiht ma net her!", which translates as "Don't lend anyone your horse, your woman or your gun!"

The text is written in the Kurrent script, an old form of German-language handwriting based on late medieval cursive writing, also known as Kurrentschrift, deutsche Schrift and German cursive

A BIT OF HISTORY

There were two driving forces for the development of the Biedermeier period. One was the growing urbanization and industrialization leading to a new urban middle class, which created a new kind of audience for the arts. The other was the political stability prevalent following the end of the Napoleonic Wars.

The effect was for artists and society in general to concentrate on the domestic and (at least in public) the non-political. This resulted in the emphasis of writers, painters, and musicians on home life for the growing middle-class meant a blossoming of furniture design and interior decorating.
